This tune comes originally from a black jazz band, Dabney’s Band, who recorded it in 1918 (Vocalion 12211). The tune was picked up and recorded by Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith in 1936 (Bluebird 6844) and from there into country tradition. The driving version performed here is certainly a classic!
