This old tune, also known as “Johnny Lover,” comes from the recorded repertoire of a Virginia band, the Roanoke Jug Band, who recorded it in 1929 (Okeh 45423). An earlier recorded version by Kentucky musicians, J.P. Nestor and Norman Edmonds, circa 1927, was never released and, to my knowledge, is unknown. The tune, as presented here, is based on a version by Wade Ward.
