The earliest recording of this well-known mountain dance tune dates to 1926 when it was waxed by one Uncle “Bunt” Stephens (Columbia 15071-D), an old-time fiddler from Kentucky. The version presented here is in a minor key, rather than the more common major key, and comes from Virginia musician Tommy Jarrell. Jarrell’s own version can be heard on County LP 756.
